Email template to ask a hair salon for its price list
You are thinking about trying a new salon and its website either lists nothing or says "prices start at." Hair services rarely have one flat price. Color work in particular depends on how long your hair is, whether it has been colored before, and which stylist you see, since many salons charge more for a senior stylist than a junior one. Asking by email gets you a real range in writing that you can compare across salons. On the phone you will usually hear "it depends, come in for a consultation," which tells you nothing about cost. A written answer also makes it awkward for the salon to surprise you at checkout with charges you never heard about.
Before you send
- The service you want, in whatever words you have. You do not need salon vocabulary; "lighter pieces around my face" is a perfectly good description.
- Your hair length and its recent history: when it was last cut or colored, and whether that was at home or at a salon. Both change the price.
- Whether you care which stylist you see. If not, say so and ask for the range across stylist levels.
- A date or window when you would like to come in, so the salon can tell you if they even have room.
- Any add-ons you might want, such as a deep conditioning treatment or a blow-dry, so they are quoted up front rather than tacked on.
Hi [salon name] team, I'm looking for a new salon and would like to book [a cut and blow-dry / a full highlight / the service you want] with you. Before I book, could you send me your current prices? A few details so you can quote accurately: - My hair is [length] and [has never been colored / was last colored about how many months ago, at home or at a salon]. - I'd like [what you want done, in your own words]. - I don't have a stylist preference, but if prices differ by stylist level, please tell me the range. Please also let me know whether a consultation is needed first and whether there's a charge for it, and roughly how long the appointment would take. I'm hoping to come in [within the next two weeks / on a specific date]. Thanks, [Your name] [Your phone number]
Everything in brackets is yours to fill in. Keep the rest as it is or change the tone to match how you write.
After you send
- A helpful salon replies with a price or a range and a sentence about what moves it up or down. If they only say "come in for a consultation," ask whether the consultation is free and whether you will get a firm price at the end of it.
- Watch for the pieces that get added at checkout: toner, an extra bowl of color for thick hair, a treatment, the blow-dry. Ask plainly whether the quoted number includes them.
- Send the same message to two or three salons. The spread between quotes for the same job is often large, and it tells you which salon is being straight with you.
- If a salon will not give any number at all in writing, treat that as your answer and book somewhere that will.
Or don't send it yourself
Forward the job to myagent@standinfor.me and let StandIn run the whole thread.
StandIn is an email assistant that handles conversations with businesses for you. You write it one email saying what you need. It writes to the business, waits for the answer, follows up when they go quiet, pushes back on the number when it should, and brings the results back to your inbox for you to decide. You don't need to install an app or sign up. The first email you send is already the start of the task.

Hi StandIn, Please find out what it would cost to get [service] at a few hair salons near me and help me pick one. What I want done: [the service, in your own words]. My hair: [length, and when it was last cut or colored]. Where: [city or neighborhood, and any salons I already have in mind]. When: [dates or days that work for me]. Budget, if any: [amount]. Contact three or four salons, get a written price and appointment length from each, ask about any extras that would be added at checkout, and bring me the answers side by side so I can choose. Thanks, [Your name]
