Email template to ask a store for a price match

You bought something, or you are about to, and you have found the same item cheaper somewhere else. Many stores have a price match policy, which is a written promise to sell at a competitor's lower price or refund the difference if you already paid. Some also honor their own price drops for a set number of days after your purchase. Asking by email lets you attach the proof, quote the policy back to them, and get an answer you can hold them to, instead of arguing at a counter with someone who has to call a manager anyway.

Before you send

  • The exact item, down to the model number, size, or color. Price matches are refused when the products differ in any detail.
  • Your order number or receipt, and the date you bought it, if you already paid.
  • Proof of the lower price: a link to the competitor's listing, or a screenshot showing the price, the date, and the seller's name.
  • A copy of the store's own price match policy. Search the store's site for "price match" and note which competitors it lists and how many days after purchase it applies.
  • The difference in dollars, so you can ask for a specific amount.
Subject Price match request, order #[order number]
Hi [store name] team,

I bought a [item name and model number] from you on [purchase date], order number [order number], for $[price you paid].

The same item is currently listed at [competitor name] for $[lower price], which is $[difference] less. Here is the listing: [link or "screenshot attached"]. It's the identical model, new and in stock.

Your price match policy says you'll match [competitors named in the policy or "authorized online retailers"] within [number of days in the policy] days of purchase, so I'd like to request a refund of the $[difference] to my original payment method.

Could you confirm by [date, a few days out] whether this has been approved? If you need anything else from me, such as a fuller screenshot, I'm happy to send it.

Thanks,

Everything in brackets is yours to fill in. Keep the rest as it is or change the tone to match how you write.

After you send

  • A store that honors matches usually approves within a day or two and refunds the difference to your card. Watch for the credit; it can take a few business days to appear.
  • A refusal typically points to a technicality: the competitor is not on their list, the item is a marketplace listing rather than sold by the retailer itself, or the window has passed. Check whether the reason actually matches their written policy before you accept it.
  • If they refuse without a reason that fits the policy, reply once, quote the policy line word for word, and ask them to point to the part that excludes your case.
  • If the store has no policy and simply says no, the fastest path is to return the item within the return window and buy it from the cheaper seller.

Or don't send it yourself

To myagent@standinfor.me Subject Get a store to match a lower price I found
Hi StandIn,

Please ask a store to match a lower price on something I bought and get the difference refunded to me.

What I bought: [item name and model number].
Where and when: [store name, purchase date, order number, price paid].
The lower price: [competitor name, price, and a link to the listing].
How I paid: [card, PayPal, or other].

If they say no, ask them to explain which part of their price match policy excludes this, and let me know whether a return and rebuy would come out cheaper.

Thanks,
