Email template to ask a furniture store to match a lower price
You have found the sofa or dining set you want at a local store, and then found the same piece for less somewhere else, online or across town. Many furniture stores will match a competitor's price on an identical item rather than lose the sale, and some will match for a period after you buy if the price drops. The catch is that "identical" is checked closely: the same manufacturer, model number, fabric or finish, and size. An email with the competitor's listing attached gives the store what it needs to say yes, and gives you the matched price in writing before you go in to pay.
Before you send
- The exact item at the store you want to buy from: manufacturer, model or SKU number, fabric or finish, and the price they quoted you or listed.
- The competitor's listing: a link or a screenshot showing the same model number, the price, and the date. Make sure it is in stock and not a clearance or floor model, since those are usually excluded.
- Whether the competitor's price includes delivery. Stores often compare the delivered price, not just the sticker.
- A date by which you will buy if the price is matched. This turns a question into a sale for them.
- The name of the salesperson you talked to, if any, so the match is credited to them.
Hi [store or salesperson name], I'm ready to buy the [item, e.g. Bramble 84-inch sofa in slate linen], model [model number], which you have listed at [price]. [Salesperson name] helped me on [date]. I've found the same item, same model and finish, at [competitor name] for [competitor price], [including / not including] delivery. The listing is attached, dated [date]. Would you match that price? I'd rather buy from you because [reason, e.g. your delivery timeline is shorter / I've bought from you before]. If you can match it, or come close with delivery included, I'll place the order by [date]. Please let me know in writing what the final price would be, including delivery and tax to [zip code]. Thanks, [Your name] [Your phone number]
Everything in brackets is yours to fill in. Keep the rest as it is or change the tone to match how you write.
After you send
- Expect a reply within a business day. A yes usually comes with a condition, like buying within a week or paying in full up front.
- If they say the competitor's item is not identical, ask exactly what differs. Sometimes it is a real difference in frame or fabric; sometimes it is a way to decline.
- If they will not match but offer free delivery or a discount on a second piece, do the math on the delivered total. That can beat a straight match.
- If they decline outright, buy from the competitor. Ask the first store one more time only if the competitor's delivery is much slower.
Or don't send it yourself

Hi StandIn, Please ask a furniture store to match a lower price I found on the same piece, and get the final number in writing. The store and item: [store name, item, model number, finish, their price, salesperson if any]. The lower price: [competitor name, price, link or screenshot, whether delivery is included]. My zip code for delivery and tax: [zip code]. When I'll buy: [date]. If they won't match it outright, see what they will do on delivery or a discount, and check whether the competitor can beat it further. Bring me both delivered totals so I can pick. Thanks, [Your name]
