Email template to request an electrical panel upgrade quote

Your electrical panel, the gray metal box with the breakers, is too small for what you want to run. An older house often has a 100-amp panel; a car charger, a heat pump, or a kitchen remodel can push you to 200 amps. Or the panel is a brand with a known safety problem and your insurer or home inspector has flagged it. A panel upgrade is a permitted job, meaning the electrician must file with your city or county and an inspector must sign off. That makes it expensive and hard to compare by phone. An email with photos and the facts lets three electricians quote the same job, and you can see who includes the permit, the utility coordination, and the inspection in the price.

Before you send

  • Photos of the panel with the door open, the label inside the door, and the meter outside. Electricians read a lot from these.
  • The current amperage, printed on the main breaker at the top of the panel (for example, "100"). If you cannot find it, say so and send the photo.
  • What you want to add: an electric vehicle charger, a heat pump, a hot tub, a second panel, or simply more capacity. This decides whether 200 amps is enough.
  • Whether the panel is one of the brands with known defects (Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and some Challenger and Sylvania models are the usual ones). Say it if you know; do not guess.
  • The house's age and whether the service line from the street is overhead or underground. The utility may need to be involved, and that can add weeks.

Everything in brackets is yours to fill in. Keep the rest as it is or change the tone to match how you write.

After you send

  • A serious electrician replies with a range from the photos or asks to visit, and either way tells you whether they pull the permit. If the reply does not mention a permit, ask directly. Skipping it is a red flag and a problem when you sell the house.
  • Expect the numbers to vary a lot. The panel itself is a few hundred dollars; the rest is labor, permit, and whatever the photos revealed. Ask each electrician to explain the biggest line.
  • Confirm they are licensed in your state and carry liability insurance. Most will send a license number without being asked twice.
  • If one quote is far below the others, ask what it leaves out. Usually it is the permit or the utility work.
